First Day Nerves

Wow, what an eye opener. I cannot tell you how many thoughts were whizzing around my head on this - my first day in the care sector. Fortunatley I was under the wing of some amazing people, particularly my "senior". A chap with some experience has also started today so we were both the "newbies" as it were. I felt humbled when I saw how the experienced staff interacted with the residents. So much has been in the media lately about how badly some care homes are run and seem to be more like institutions. My place of work could not be further removed from those with it's innovative approach to care especially for those with dementia.
My shift flew by, I assisted with personal care - something that I NEVER thought I would ever do in my life - helped to serve a fabulous 3 course meal and then sat with a few residents looking at their photo albums or just being there close to them. I did have to duck a flying fist and was told that I was a "bloody nuisance" but it's hardly surprising when one thinks how bewildering and frightening it must be for someone with this cruel indiscriminate condition.
I have a day off before going back....will I return for more? You bet and I can't wait!
